Reading Comprehension (40 points)

Question Number One: (20 points)

Read the following text about friendship carefully then complete the tasks below.

It used to be thought friendship was something just ‘happened’ between people. However, many studies by social scientists have shown that becoming friends with another person is a complex process, but one that can be learnt. Making (and keeping) friends isn’t easy – it takes effort. Here are the top five tips for turning someone you know into a lasting friend.

1: Be interested:

Everyone has acquaintances – people we know, but who aren’t (yet) friends. To take your relationship further than just discussing the weather, you need to show an interest in their lives. Ask them questions (but don’t get too personal at first). Even more importantly, listen to their answers and remember the information for the next time you meet.

2: Don’t let one mistake get in the way:

Maybe you made a joke that annoyed your new friend, or forgot to call when you promised to. It’s almost inevitable that something will go wrong at some point, but it’s how you react to the situation that may be more important than the initial error. An honest apology and making the effort not to let it happen again are usually all that’s needed.

3: Be clear, but not too demanding:

When making arrangements, there are two opposite ways of behaving that can harm a friendship. The first is forcing the other person to make all the decisions by saying things like ‘I don’t mind, you choose’ or ‘Whatever you want’. The other is being too particular and inflexible about what you want to happen, or where, or when. Try to find a middle way between the two extremes.

4: Don’t try too hard:

It’s understandable that you want to impress a new friend and make them aware of your good points, but don’t go too far. Research shows that most of us tend to like people who don’t boast about their achievements or take themselves too seriously.

5: Keep secrets to yourself:

If someone tells you something ‘in confidence’, it means just that – they are confident that you won’t tell anyone else. In other words, they trust you. If you then pass on this information to another person, that trust is broken. Even if your friend doesn’t find out what you’ve done, this kind of behaviour can easily destroy a friendship over time.

In recent years, there has been a noticeable trend among university students who are not only focused on their studies but also on developing their own small businesses. These ambitious undergraduates are finding innovative ways to start and manage companies while still pursuing their education. Let's take a closer look at a few enterprising students and their successful journey.

One inspiring example is Sarah, a business major who developed her own mobile app. She saw a need in the market for an efficient task management tool and decided to create an app that would help people stay organized. Sarah spent countless hours coding and testing her app, ensuring it was user-friendly and packed with useful features. With her technical skills and determination, she was able to successfully develop and launch her app on various app stores. Sarah said balancing work and studies was challenging, but she didn't forget to pay attention in class. “I was learning important business concepts while I was using them in my own business,” she said.

Jane has always been creative, and she enjoys making things in her spare time. While in secondary school, she sold handmade embroidery to people in her neighborhood. When Jane visited Palestine, she fell in love with the handmade embroidery she saw there. It inspired her to start her own embroidery business. Instead of partying with friends or traveling, Jane spent most of her weekends for the next two years selling her high-quality embroidery at small shows and private sales. As a result, Jane's Collection is now produced and sold direct to the public around the world.

As a competitive runner, Jack became very familiar with energy drinks. However, Jack found problems with most energy drinks. They either tasted bad, used chemicals that weren't healthy, or made the user feel tired again when their sugary energy was used up. This encouraged Jack to use an old family recipe for fruit punch, he developed an energy drink with natural ingredients, and found a partner to produce it. His energy drink, called "Refreshing", which he sold directly to his fellow students. As his business grows, Jack says he's learning on the job. “People would think it would be difficult to balance class and a business,” he said, “but I'm learning more now than I ever have in the classroom.”
